A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY PROCESS
A former clinic area in Berlin-Westend with 8 buildings, including two accommodations for refugees, is to be developed into one of the most important arrival and participation locations in the city.
In partnership with the district of Charlottenburg, MTS is designing and managing a planning process that involves all local institutions and the people on site. Over a period of two years, the area is to be developed into a lively campus in a joint design process.
The Eschenallee campus will implement the guiding ideas of the "Integration Hub" concept. An active community will be created on site. An entire area will be transformed into a place of community and neighborhood. In an incubator, people can develop their talents and ideas into initiatives further.
Since summer 2020, MTS has been developing the Campus Eschenalle site into a pilot project for integration together with the integration office of the district of Berlin Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, several senate administrations and local initiatives. The project is funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the district.
Campus Esche is a site owned by the state with a total size of 2.1 hectares (21,152 square meters) in the middle of Berlin-Westend. Until 2014, the site belonged to the Department of Psychology and Neurology at Freie Universität Berlin. With the concentration of the university on its campus in Zehlendorf, the area was unused. In 2015, the vacant ward house and a villa were reopened as accommodations for refugees.
In spring 2020, the idea was developed to think of two street blocks as one unit and to develop the area as a socio-cultural campus. Since then, the project "Campus Esche" has been planned and realized by the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf Integration Office in cooperation with MTS and the actors active on the site, following the model of an "Integration Hub ". "Campus Esche" is to become a place where people come together and shape society together. Through its offerings, the interaction of the institutions and the special atmosphere, it will provide added value for the district and the urban society. At the same time, an inspiring model project is being created that will radiate beyond the city limits.
